Zanzibar is an archipelago made up of more than 50 islands in the Indian Ocean. Unguja and Pemba are the largest and they are surrounded by at least 50 smaller islands. They are a coastal jewel that can be found about 36 kilometers off the mainland of Tanzania. Zanzibar was the center of trading for Eastern Africa and attracted explorers of the Malays, Phoenicians, Chinese, Sumerians and Arabs in the past.
